Hi!
There's a statement that keeps popping up in our product dev sessions.
It goes something like this.
"Everything should have two uses".
It's kind of a guiding beacon built around the idea that with a little thought and effort, we can take less gear on our adventures, as long as the gear we do take works doubly hard for us.
Less is more.
Light is right.
You get the picture.
Now, I'll be honest, sometimes we don't always hit that "everything has two uses" goal.
A CRF skid plate, well that's going to do a great job of protecting your bike but I've not figured out another use for it yet. Trailside frying pan maybe?
A Trailhead Jersey, now we're getting somewhere, just look at the smile on Jim's face when he discovered how good it was at keeping his camping pillow in place.
But today I want to talk to you about The Singeltrack Jacket.
There's a handful of bits of gear that absolutely nail that "two uses" philosophy and The Singletrack is one of them.
The design brief was greatly influenced by The Supershirt, our CE AA baselayer. Because we knew we had this layer in our system, and that rider protection was covered first (not last), it allowed us to re-imagine what an adventure motorcycling outer layer could be. We weren't restricted by the fact that our outer layer needed to be highly abrasion proof, or include armour.
The Singletrack Jacket really answered the question, "what would an outdoors hiking jacket look like, if it were built for adventure motorcycling?"
3 layer laminate waterproof fabric. Outer layer is 240D ripstop nylon 6-6. Slightly heavier and more durable than the average waterproof walking jacket fabric. Also great at resisting wind.
A pack-away hood. Because if it's raining off the bike, you won't have a helmet on to keep your head dry. And wear the hood under your helmet if riding through very bad weather.
Reinforced abrasion zones. Shoulder, elbow and hip panels feature a polyester and kevlar blend fabric for extra durability.
Massive underarm vents. To aid cooling when the conditions improve or if you raise your body temperature through physical exertion.
On the bike, When it's cold, windy or wet, I wear my Supershirt 2.0 + Baltic mid layer + Singletrack Jacket.
When it's warmer I pack away my mid layer and enjoy the protection of the Supershirt 2.0 and weather protection of the Singletrack Jacket.
When I start to heat up I open the huge underarm vents of The Singletrack Jacket and enjoy the breeze.
But here's the thing.
On average, if I'm lucky, I'm on the bike 2 or 3 days a month. Plus maybe a couple of weeks on a TET trip with friends.
The rest of the time I'm on foot, out and about, walking, hiking, cycling, taking the kids to school, just generally living life outside.
And for that, if it's at all wet or windy, it's my Singletrack Jacket that gets used.
One jacket.
Two uses.
Bike + life.
